Automotive Exhaust Tips upgrades

If you have a car or truck and would like to add some cool exhaust tips read on as we discuss the options.

Exhaust tips can really set off a car or truck and they come in various shapes. The standard old school tips are usually made of steel and are chrome plated. Usually they have an angled cut and come in various sizes to fit different exhaust tubing. In general there are three main attachment systems used and they range from a simple V band clamp, screws holding them on or welding them on permanently.

If you have a factory splash pan with cut outs on both sides you have to be careful to size the tips so they do not rub and or hit during any tail pipe vibration or movement. Many manufacturers including Billy Boat and others offer stainless tips in round, square, oval and custom shaped units for many different Street Rods. Some have small wire beads on the outer edge which is a nice touch. As mentioned earlier clearance is very important so be sure you have exhaust hangers close to the end of the pipe where the tip will be attached. This insures that you will not have vibration damage from the tip hitting on the body and rubbing through the painted surfaces and or scuffing the tips chrome or stainless finish.

The tips can also affect the sound of the exhaust more then one would think. If they are stainless you could even use a scuff pad and create a satin finish for a nice affect. If you are building a custom Street Rods project then another important aspect to consider is having the exhaust far enough out past the rear bumper so that water vapor and exhaust soot will not affect it by making the rear bumper a mess and eventually affecting the chrome with rust pits from the constant moisture.

Be sure when deciding where to place the tips that you consider these problem areas so that you will be successful.
